Inter Milan are closing in on the loan capture of Chelsea defender Malang Sarr in the upcoming January transfer window.

A recent report from Sport Mediaset has offered an interesting update on the future of Malang Sarr. It appears the Chelsea defender is set for a move to Inter Milan in the upcoming January transfer window. He is expected to join the club on a short-term loan deal, with a buyout option of around €15 million.

During the weekend clash against Manchester United, Sarr was in Milan to negotiate a contract with Inter. The Italian champions were apparently recommended as the ideal destination for the defender by his Chelsea teammate Romelu Lukaku. Both the parties may soon reach an agreement, although the player won’t be eligible to play for his new club until January.

A product of the OGC Nice youth academy in his native France, Sarr joined Chelsea last year on a free transfer. However, he was immediately loaned out to FC Porto in order to help him gain regular minutes at the professional level.

The Frenchman endured a disastrous little spell in Portugal, featuring in only eight league matches before returning to Stamford Bridge in the summer. But his fortunes haven’t improved at all, with the defender mustering only one appearance in the Premier League so far.

Hence, a potential move to Inter could be a lifesaver for Malang Sarr, as he looks to make an impression in Serie A during the second half of the campaign. From a sporting perspective, the centre-back is likely being targeted as a direct replacement for Stefan de Vrij, who has recently picked up an injury, forcing Simone Inzaghi to play Andrea Ranocchia at the back.

Inter are also concerned over the long-term future of Milan Skriniar. The defensive stalwart has been linked with a move to Tottenham recently, and it won’t be surprising to see him jumping ship in the near future.

That is where Malang Sarr could prove to be very useful for the Nerazzurri. The 22-year-old already has a solid track record at Nice and may turn out to be an excellent prospect for Inter if he can replicate his performance in Italy next year.

Sarr won’t be the only defender to have moved to the city of Milan this season, with the club also sanctioning a departure of Fikayo Tomori earlier this summer. The Englishman joined AC Milan on a permanent deal and has since established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A. Whether Sarr follows in his footsteps remains to be seen.
