Liverpool are reportedly ready to drop their hunt for Rennes winger Jeremy Doku in favour of his teammate Kamaldeen Sulemana.

A recent report from Fichajes has offered an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of a couple of Rennes wingers. Jeremy Doku, in particular, was reportedly one of the club’s priority January targets following an excellent UEFA Euro 2020 campaign. But it appears the English giants are prepared to cede their pursuit of the explosive 19-year-old winger.

Liverpool are ready to move on from Doku as they believe his Rennes teammate Kamaldeen Sulemana may offer more potential. It is an interesting development given the fact that Doku is widely regarded as the potential face of the Belgian attack in the future, as the Red Devils look to finally move on from its golden generation.

Formerly of the prestigious Anderlecht academy, Doku moved to Rennes last summer. The explosive winger did not require any time whatsoever, featuring in as many as 30 league games in his debut campaign in Ligue 1. Although a tally of two goals and three assists was not particularly eye-catching, the 19-year-old turned many heads with his pace and trickery on the flanks.

It was evident in Doku’s performances for Belgium at UEFA Euro 2020, prompting interest from Liverpool in the summer. However, after a slow start to the new season, largely due to injuries, the Reds are prepared to set their sights on Kamaldeen Sulemana.

A summer arrival from Nordsjaelland, the Ghanaian international has been much more influential in terms of productivity. In just 14 league matches so far, the 19-year-old has already surpassed Doku’s tally of three goals in 44 competitive outings for Rennes, having netted four times while also bagging two assists.

The Reds, though, are set to face stiff competition from other top clubs across Europe in the pursuit of Sulemana, who was closely linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer.

As for Jeremy Doku, he has no shortage of suitors despite Liverpool opting to look elsewhere. Recent reports suggest that the Belgian is being monitored by European giants such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich, who may consider him as a direct replacement for Kingsley Coman next season.

However, the 19-year-old winger certainly needs to work on his productivity if he is to make waves across European football, especially at a higher level. So his future may actually depend on how he performs during the remainder of the campaign.
