Tottenham Hotspur are facing competition from Serie A trendsetters Napoli in their pursuit of Torino star Gleison Bremer.

According to Fichajes, north London giants Tottenham Hotspur face competition from SSC Napoli in the race to sign Torino’s Brazilian defender Gleison Bremer.

The 24-year-old joined the Italian top-flight side from Brazilian outfit Atletico Mineiro in 2018. He has since developed into a key player for Il Toro. Bremer has so far made 87 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and assisting five more in all competitions.

Despite occupying the 11th spot in Serie A this season, Torino have the league’s second-best defence. The Bulls have conceded 13 times in 13 games so far, a tally bettered only by Napoli, who have let in seven goals. Bremer has played in 12 of those games, scoring twice in the process.

His performances have not been lost on Tottenham, who are in the market for a central defender. Antonio Conte’s side could do with reinforcements in defence going forward and can benefit largely from signing the Brazilian centre-back.

Spurs landed Argentine international Cristian Romero last summer. The 23-year-old was just getting into his elements before an injury while on international duty with Argentina condemned him to the sidelines. Romero has what it takes to become a rock at the back for Tottenham for years to come. However, he lacks a dependable partner at the back.

Both Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez are inconsistent, while Joe Rodon has not featured much this season. Adding a physically dominant player like Bremer alongside Romero could give Spurs the makings of a solid defence. This could very well lay the foundations for Conte to build a title-winning outfit for the years to come.

The north Londoners’ pursuit of the defender will, however, not be straightforward. Serie A leaders Napoli are also in the fray for his signing and have earmarked the player as a potential replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly.

The Senegalese star is, on his day, amongst the best centre-backs in world football. However, his future at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium is far from assured. Should he leave the club, Bremer would make a worthy replacement. He is already familiar with the Italian game and is also of the right age group to become a long term option.

The Torino ace has outperformed Koulibaly this season and is also a bigger threat in the air. A physically dominant player, he has the potential to become one of the leading defenders in Europe. With Juventus and Inter Milan also in the mix, Bremer is not short of top tier options. Where the Brazilian ace will eventually end up remains to be seen.
