Veteran Croatian midfielder Luka Modric has reportedly rejected an offer from Tottenham and is determined to extend his stay at Real Madrid.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Luka Modric is determined to stay put at Real Madrid and is closing in on signing a new contract with the club. The Croatian midfielder has also rejected offers from Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United but will consider joining Manchester City if renewal talks with Real Madrid collapse.

Luka Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur late in the summer transfer window of 2012. Nine years since first making his way to the Spanish capital, the 36-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best players to have ever donned the famous white kit, establishing a lasting legacy at the club.

To date, Modric has made 403 appearances for Real Madrid, chipping in with 28 goals and 65 assists in the process. However, his Real Madrid future is not set in stone as his contract with Los Blancos will expire next summer. Such a situation has piqued the interest of several clubs, with Tottenham being one of his prospective suitors.

The interest from Tottenham is understandable, considering they have struggled to create too many chances from midfield since the departure of Christian Eriksen. While players like Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg provide a solid base in the middle of the park, Spurs also need better creative output.

To that end, Modric is a viable target for Tottenham. However, the north Londoners have been handed a major blow in pursuit of the veteran Croatian midfielder, who has rejected the chance to rejoin them. In addition, the Real Madrid star has also turned down the prospect of making his way to Newcastle United.

According to El Nacional, Modric will only consider joining Manchester City if he leaves Real Madrid. The Premier League champions are prepared to offer him a deal that will see him play at the Etihad for two years before signing for sister club New York City FC on a two-year contract.

Modric’s preference still is to stay put at Real Madrid and sign a new two-year deal. The report does claim that he is closing in on signing a renewal with Real Madrid, but it is not set in stone yet. For now, all that remains certain is that the 36-year-old is not rejoining Tottenham, with a new two-year contract with the Merengues likely to be confirmed soon.
