Newcastle United are reportedly aiming to beat Tottenham and West Ham United in the race to sign Jesse Lingard from Manchester United.

According to a report by The Northern Echo, Newcastle United are keen on securing the services of Jesse Lingard in the January transfer window. The Magpies are hoping to outbid Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United in the race to sign the Manchester United ace.

Jesse Lingard has endured a topsy-turvy ride at Manchester United over the past half a decade or so. At one point, the Englishman was a regular feature for the Red Devils, with his best phase coming under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho. However, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge of the first team, the 28-year-old gradually dropped down the pecking order.

The same has been the case so far this season, with Lingard managing only 154 minutes of action, racking up two goals and an assist in the process. However, despite his struggles at Manchester United, he continues to be a popular figure in the transfer market, with Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Tottenham Hotspur keen on signing him.

Newcastle United are laying down a plan of action for the January transfer window, their first since the club’s takeover by the Public Investment Fund. And Lingard is one of the Manchester United players the Magpies are targeting, and for a good reason, as he could be a major upgrade on most attacking options at St. James’ Park.

As for West Ham, the Hammers have been keen on signing Lingard following his successful loan spell in the second half of the 2020/21 season. The east London club tried to sign him in the summer transfer window but failed to do so. The interest has not waned since, and it has even been claimed that Lingard is inching closer to joining West Ham.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have not been linked with Lingard too heavily. However, amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Dele Alli, pursuing a player like Lingard would be a step in the right direction for Spurs, who have been linked with Weston McKennie and Corentin Tolisso among others.

However, Tottenham and West Ham could face an uphill battle in pursuit of the Manchester United ace, with Newcastle looking to outbid their competition in the race to sign him. So, it remains to be seen if Lingard leaves Manchester United to join Newcastle or if Tottenham or West Ham prevail instead.
