Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in the services of Jonathan David, who is expected to leave LOSC Lille.

According to Le10Sport, Jonathan David is expected to leave LOSC Lille, as the club is in need of a financial injection despite winning the Ligue 1 title last season. It has put a host of clubs across Europe, including Newcastle United, on red alert as they look to snap up one of the most in-form forwards in the French top flight.

Formerly of KAA Gent, David’s 13 goals and three assists were vital in helping Lille astonishingly win the Ligue 1 during the 2020/21 campaign. But the forward has stepped up his game to a whole new level in the new season, netting eight goals in just 13 league matches.

The 21-year-old’s performances are not only restricted to just Ligue 1 either, as the player also has been in top form for his country. His three goals and two assists have played a pivotal role in helping Canada currently remain on top of the North American qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022, with the Lille starlet also boasting a stellar record of scoring 18 goals in 23 appearances for the national team.

Unsurprisingly, Jonathan David’s performances has sparked the interest of many clubs across Europe. While giants like PSG and Inter have already let their interest known, Premier League’s Newcastle United are also in the mix, hoping to make a statement by signing the Canadian international.

The Magpies are expected to enjoy a busy winter transfer window, having been linked with some of the biggest players in Europe after being taken over by a Saudi-backed consortium. Their new owners intend to make NUFC a footballing superpower and have already given Eddie Howe a sizable budget for the upcoming window.

The potential addition of David, in that regard, could certainly be a step in the right direction, as far as Newcastle United are concerned. However, the report does suggest that the Canadian star is unlikely to be offloaded in the January transfer window and will rather make the move after the end of the season.

His Lille teammate, Renato Sanches, though, may move on in the coming months, with Liverpool among the clubs interested in his services. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle United join the race to sign the Portuguese international as well, given that he would significantly improve the club’s midfield unit and shouldn’t find any problems getting regular minutes.
