Liverpool are reportedly ready to rival Juventus in the pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach’s wantaway midfielder Denis Zakaria.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Liverpool are among the clubs interested in the services of Denis Zakaria. The Borussia Monchengladbach starlet is one of the most in-demand midfielders in the market as his current contract with the Foals expires at the end of the season. The 24-year-olf does not wish to prolong his career with Gladbach, which has put multiple clubs on red alert.

In addition to Liverpool, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund remain in contention to sign the Swiss international in the near future. However, the Reds hold a great advantage as Zakaria has reportedly told his friends that he prefers a move to the Premier League, which is ideal for his style of play.

It could serve as a massive boost for Jurgen Klopp, who is hoping to sign a new midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window. It appears the Liverpool tactician is keen on nailing down a proper replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, especially amid the uncertain future of Thiago Alcantara.

The former Bayern Munich superstar has been linked with a sensational return to Barcelona, with new coach Xavi Hernandez eyeing a potential reunion. Even though Thiago has not set the world alight since joining the Reds, his departure would nonetheless create a void in the club’s midfield unit.

This is where Zakaria comes into the fray, having enjoyed immense success at Gladbach since joining the club in 2017. With 138 competitive appearances, the former Young Boys prodigy has emerged as a lynchpin in midfield, often acting as the aggressor – one who would pressurise opposition ball-carriers and break up the play.

The 24-year-old has proven his quality time and time again with his performances in the Bundesliga and even at the international stage with Switzerland, notably helping his country secure direct qualification to next year’s World Cup, ahead of reigning Euro 2020 champions Italy.

However, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool can convince Zakaria to make the move to Merseyside in the summer. While the Gladbach star does want to make the switch to Premier League, it has been his lifelong dream to play for Barcelona as well. And to no one’s surprise, the Catalan giants are, in fact, involved in the race to sign the Swiss international as they continue to poach soon-to-free agents across Europe.
