AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli is the subject of interest from Premier League’s biggest clubs as he runs down his contract at San Siro.

According to Transfer Market Web, Manchester United and Chelsea have entered the chase for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli, joining Tottenham in his pursuit. The Premier League giants are eyeing a free transfer for the centre-back.

Alessio Romagnoli has been a steady presence in the AC Milan defence since he arrived from AS Roma in 2015. After playing an important role in their recent advent, the club captain has found it difficult to break into Stefano Pioli’s team in 2021, with injuries and form playing a crucial role.

Pioli has preferred Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori in his preferred centre-back partnership, leaving Romagnoli short of regular game time. With his contract expiring in 2022, the 26-year-old might represent a great acquisition for sides looking for a defender with immense experience.

Moreover, Milan have offered him an extension, which will pay him well below his current package of €6 million per season. Such a situation has probably ticked him off and could prompt him to exit San Siro. There are clubs that could fulfil his financial demands and give him a place in a competing squad.

There is significant recent interest from Spain’s biggest sides, especially from cash-strapped Barcelona, who are eyeing a free transfer for the defender. However, in light of interest from Premier League clubs, Romagnoli might consider a move to England, where teams could pay more, and he can be part of a more challenging league.

Tottenham have been strongly linked with a move recently after they appointed Antonio Conte as their new manager. In recent weeks, the Italian’s arrival has increased the links to Serie A players, and the manager is prioritising defensive signings to shore up his backline.

Spurs are now reportedly facing stiff competition from Chelsea and Manchester United, as they want an experienced defender to play at the back for the next few years. And Romagnoli might be one of their targets.

Chelsea’s relentless chase of Sevilla star Jules Kounde only ended with the Spanish side increasing their asking price. Thomas Tuchel wants a reliable option at the back after Kurt Zouma’s move to West Ham United. In addition, the possible exit of key man Antonio Rudiger, who is running down his current deal, has put Chelsea in a spot of bother.

Manchester United have been defensively awful in recent weeks, with many suggesting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to buy specific, high profile defenders to solve the issue. Their summer arrival Raphael Varane has endured a torrid time with injuries, while Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have been inconsistent.

Romagnoli could prove his mettle at any of Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, as he can bring his top-quality experience from Italy over to England. The AC Milan star could also be a bargain signing if he excels at any of those teams, considering he will be available on a knocked-down price in January or on a free, next summer.
