Newcastle United are holding discussions with the representatives of Niklas Sule, indicating a possible free transfer in the summer.
According to Newcastle World, Niklas Sule could be a subject of transfer speculation with a move to Newcastle United mooted for the giant centre-back. With the German’s contract expiring at the end of the season, the Magpies have reportedly opened talks with his representatives over a summer move.
Niklas Sule was often overshadowed by the many central defenders ahead of him in the pecking order at Bayern Munich. The likes of David Alaba, Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng have all had plenty of time under the limelight at the expense of Sule.
Since none of those centre-backs play for Bayern anymore, with Boateng and Alaba leaving in the previous window, Sule has become their first choice starter. He has made 11 appearances in Bundesliga this term, helping Bayern lead the table.
Even though he looks settled in Julian Nagelsmann’s backline, transfer speculation has caught up Bayern once more as Sule is close to running down his contract at the club. His deal expires at the end of the season, and if his representatives fail to secure a new deal as per his specifications, he could take the same route as Alaba by moving on a free transfer.
At 26, Sule can be a long-term option anywhere across Europe, as many big clubs will certainly be keeping tabs on his situation. Reports suggested the centre-back wants a contract that pays out £8 million per season, a figure Bayern are not entirely willing to meet.
So, Sule might move on from the Bavarians next summer, with Premier League clubs such as Chelsea expressing an interest. Thomas Tuchel would certainly like to have him after chasing a central defender all summer long. Meanwhile, Newcastle United have also expressed a strong interest in the centre-back. The newly cash-rich Magpies are have been linked with a plethora of players since their takeover.
With the January window approaching, these rumours linking players to the club will certainly be on the rise. However, there seems to be something concrete brewing in the background concerning the Sule story, as multiple sources have reported it. One last week said Sule might be open to a switch to Newcastle if conditions were favourable, which would be, given their ability to match his financial demands.
The Magpies have reportedly opened talks with Sule’s representatives, with a view of getting into a pre-contract agreement in January. If things go well in those discussions, the defender could be a Newcastle player as soon as the window opens up next summer.
Currently, Newcastle may not represent an attractive destination for top players, as they languish in Premier League’s relegation zone. There is a genuine threat of relegation, irrespective of their spending power in the January window. So, it remains to be seen how these talks with Sule progress in the coming weeks.
