Liverpool are reportedly preparing to make an offer of around €40 million to try and snare away Alexander Isak from La Liga leaders Real Sociedad.

According to a report from El Nacional, Liverpool are keen on signing Real Sociedad and Sweden striker Alexander Isak and are prepared to offer €40 million for his services.

A product of the AIK Solna academy in Sweden, Isak was likened to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the formative years of his career for his goalscoring prowess. This led to the young striker securing a big move to Borussia Dortmund in January 2017, but things did not work out for him in Germany.

In two years with the Black and Yellows, Isak managed just 13 senior appearances, scoring a solitary goal before being shipped out on loan to Willem II in January 2019. Isak thrived at the Dutch club, bagging 14 goals in 18 games, which prompted Real Sociedad to sign him in the following summer.

Since moving to Spain, Isak has gradually developed into a consistent performer for La Real. While a tally of 38 goals and six assists from 102 games does not exactly scream prolific, the Swedish striker’s numbers have been improving season after season. Indeed, having managed just nine league goals in his debut season, Isak netted 17 times in La Liga last term.

He has three goals in ten games this term and has played a key role in Real Sociedad’s ascent to the top of the La Liga table. In addition to that, he also is an important player for the Swedish national team, for whom he has notched up eight goals in 29 matches. Isak’s progress hasn’t gone unnoticed, with a number of top clubs, including Barcelona, having been keen on signing him last summer.

While he stayed put with Sociedad, the interest in him has continued to grow. Arsenal have identified the 22-year-old as a priority target, with Liverpool also now sizing up a move for the Swede. The Reds are in the market for additions to their attacking unit as Jurgen Klopp is in need of infusing some youth into his frontline.

Mohamed Salah is going strong as ever this season but will be 30 next year, as will Sadio Mane. Roberto Firmino, meanwhile, has already entered into his thirties. Furthermore, Liverpool do not have a natural centre-forward in their midst beyond Divock Origi, who is only seen as a squad player with a bit-part role.

So, there have been rumours of the Merseysiders wanting to address this situation, leading to links with RB Salzburg’s Karim Adeyemi. Isak has also emerged as an option for Liverpool, with the report claiming that the Reds see him as someone who would fit in like a glove in Klopp’s team.

To that end, they are also ready to make an offer of around €40 million to sign Isak. But with Real Sociedad having tied him down to a contract until 2026, they may want a bigger fee for the Swedish international. It remains to be seen if Liverpool can convince the La Liga leaders to part ways with their ace striker.

Isak for €40m (which is overly optimistic), when we couldn’t find €30m (approx) for Patson Daka this Summer?

I don’t believe that FSG were ‘keeping their powder dry’ this Summer, when we desperately needed an ‘always fit’ midfielder to replace the ‘always’ fit Wijnaldum.

Bringing in Thiago and letting Wijnaldum go has effectively left us 2 midfielders down every time Thiago is injured.
