AS Roma have reportedly set their sights on Lucas Vazquez, with Jose Mourinho keen on reuniting with the Real Madrid utility man.

According to a report by Italian publication Corriere dello Sport, Lucas Vazquez is the subject of interest from AS Roma over a move in the January transfer window. Real Madrid are open to the prospect of selling the 30-year-old, with Jose Mourinho eager to reunite with him.

Lucas Vazquez joined Real Madrid as a 16-year-old in 2007 before graduating from their academy three years later. However, he had to bide his time before making the grade in the first-team setup, with his big breakthrough coming in the 2015/16 season. Since then, the Spaniard has been a solid asset for each of the managers who have coached him.

A superb utility man due to his ability to play as a right-back and a wide attacker equally adeptly, Vazquez has made 253 appearances for Real Madrid while chipping in with 27 goals and 54 assists along the way. However, his time at Real Madrid could draw to a close in the January transfer window, with AS Roma setting their sights on him.

The feel-good factor around Jose Mourinho has disappeared just three months into his reign, with AS Roma winning just one of their last seven games in all competitions. And it looks like the Serie A outfit could be set to spend big in the January transfer window, after having done so in the summer as well.

In particular, wide attacking reinforcement seems to be on Roma’s agenda, with Anwar El Ghazi among those linked with them for a January move. And now, Vazquez has emerged as a target for the Giallorossi, which makes sense considering Carles Perez has not enjoyed the faith of Mourinho so far.

Vazquez is not the only Real Madrid player on the radar of Roma, who have also been linked with Dani Ceballos, Nacho and Luka Jovic. However, signing the 30-year-old could be the most straightforward of their pursuits, with Carlo Ancelotti open to selling him and facilitating a reunion with Mourinho in the process.

Such a stance is surprising, considering Real Madrid had been desperate to tie Vazquez down to a new deal in the summer. However, if he does end up leaving, Real Madrid could fetch a sizable fee from the Spaniard’s sale, and it remains to be seen if Roma firm up their interest in him this winter.
