Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a move to sign 27-year-old Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter on a free transfer next summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Matthias Ginter is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona over a potential Bosman move in next summer’s transfer window. The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract with Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

Matthias Ginter joined Borussia Monchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017 and has since established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. In the last four years, the German international has become a key figure for club and country, growing in importance with every passing season.

To date, the 27-year-old has made 158 appearances for Gladbach, chipping in with ten goals and five assists along the way. However, the Bundesliga outfit are in a precarious position over the long-term future of their prized defender, who is in the final year of his contract with the club. Such a situation has alerted Barcelona.

Barcelona have previously been linked with Ginter on a few occasions, and the continued interest in the German international is understandable. The fact that he will possibly arrive at Camp Nou on a free transfer only further makes him an appealing target in addition to his defensive abilities.

Barcelona do appear to be in need of bolstering their defence for a second successive summer transfer window, as Eric Garcia has flattered to deceive so far while Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti are facing uncertain futures at the club. As a result, the Blaugrana have been linked with several centre-backs lately, including Jules Kounde, Matthijs de Ligt and Andreas Christensen.

However, Ginter appears to be an ideal candidate to reinforce the defensive line, keeping in mind the Catalan giants’ financial woes and the fact that he would provide the best years of his career to the club. However, any move for Ginter will depend on whether the next Barcelona manager fancies him for his project.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are not the only club keen on signing the 27-year-old on a Bosman move, with Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur also among his prospective suitors. So, it remains to be seen if Barcelona can stave off the competition to land Ginter or if he ends up joining another club instead if he leaves Gladbach as a free agent.
