Former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has reportedly emerged as a shock target for Tottenham, as they look for a replacement for Hugo Lloris.

According to Independent, Emiliano Martinez has emerged as the latest candidate for Tottenham Hotspur in their quest to replace Hugo Lloris. The north Londoners have already launched an enquiry for the 29-year-old Argentine international, exploring the possibility of landing the Aston Villa ace, who is considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Aston Villa have no intention of cashing in on Martinez anytime soon. However, they are aware of the fact that the Argentine would yield a high valuation next summer, having enjoyed a successful spell at Villa Park while winning the Copa America with Argentina.

Tottenham, therefore, are hopeful that they can land the former Arsenal shot-stopper, who has not been a favourite among the Gunners fans since departing the Emirates in 2020. He has consistently raised eyebrows with his expressions and remarks on and off the pitch, thus raising animosity between him and fans in north London.

It has put Tottenham on red alert as they prepare for life without Hugo Lloris next season. The experienced Frenchman’s current contract with Spurs expires at the end of the season, forcing the club to enter the market for a new goalkeeper.

The Lilywhites did bring in Pierluigi Gollini in the summer, but it appears the Italian is yet to win the trust of coach Nuno Espirito Santo. As a result, Tottenham are keen on finding a fresh face in the goalkeeping department who can offer competition to the table and serve as a potential long-term replacement for Lloris.

Martinez fits the bill well due to his recent explosion into the Premier League scene coupled with his success at Aston Villa and Argentina national team. The 29-year-old also brings a wealth of experience, having spent ten years at Arsenal prior to his move to Villa Park last summer.

Although his tally of 38 competitive appearances might not be eye-catching, the goalkeeper has won two FA Cup titles and can offer that much-needed winning mentality at Spurs.

However, it appears unlikely that Martinez would be all too keen on joining the direct rivals of Arsenal, irrespective of his recent stunts. The Argentine international does share a good relationship with the club, and as such, Tottenham may have to shift their attention to other alternatives in their search for a new goalkeeper.

Etienne Green, for one, is a potential option for the Lilywhites, who have also been linked with a move for West Bromwich Albion shot-stopper Sam Johnstone.
