Real Madrid midfielder and club icon Luka Modric has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for former club Tottenham Hotspur.

According to a report from Catalan publication El Nacional, Tottenham Hotspur are considering the possibility of re-signing former midfielder Luka Modric from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

One of the best midfielders of the modern era, Luka Modric became a star during his time at Tottenham. Having arrived at the north London club in 2008 from Dinamo Zagreb, the Croat spent four years at the White Hart Lane, quickly establishing himself as one of the finest in his positions in the Premier League and Europe.

Naturally, the big clubs came calling, and after having seen a move to Chelsea fall through, Modric ended up securing a transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2012. The veteran star endured a difficult start to life in Spain, struggling in his debut season at the club under Jose Mourinho.

However, from his second season onwards, Modric has been one of Real Madrid’s best players year after year, helping the club scale great heights. Indeed, the 36-year-old has won four UEFA Champions League trophies with the Merengues along with numerous other domestic honours. He also won the Ballon d’Or for 2018, breaking the Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo duopoly for the award.

At 36, Modric continues to be a vital cog in the middle of the park for Real Madrid. However, his contract with the club runs out at the end of the season. While he is believed to be keen on retiring at the Bernabeu, president Florentino Perez is unsure of offering the veteran midfielder a new contract, as his departure would free up wages for the club to make new signings.

This has led to speculations surrounding his future in Spain beyond the current season. There had been some interest from Premier League champions Manchester City with Tottenham Hotspur also now throwing their hat in the ring for their former midfield mainstay as per the report mentioned above.

The Lilywhites are building a new project at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo and sporting director Fabio Paratici. While the focus has been on securing young talents with potential, the club would be open to adding a senior player like Modric, who would bring a lot of value to the squad with his experience and winning mentality.

The fact that he would be available on a free transfer only adds to the appeal for Tottenham, even though his wage demands could be steep. For now, however, they are open to the prospect of bringing Modric back to the club next summer, provided an opportunity presents itself.
