Newcastle United are reportedly keen on signing Sergio Busquets, who could be set to leave Barcelona next summer.

According to a report by Catalan outlet El Nacional, Sergio Busquets could be on his way out of Barcelona amid a deteriorating relationship between Joan Laporta and his agent Josep Maria Orobitg. Such a situation has alerted Newcastle United, who are looking to offer Busquets the last major contract of his career.

Sergio Busquets has blossomed into one of the greatest midfielders of all time since making his Barcelona breakthrough in 2008. Over the last 13 years, his status as one of the best holding midfielders in the game has remained untouched, with the veteran Spanish international carving out a fine legacy for club and country.

To date, the 33-year-old has made 642 appearances for Barcelona, chipping in with 15 goals and 41 assists along the way. However, there are suggestions that Busquets could depart Camp Nou soon, with the relationship between Joan Laporta and his agent Josep Maria Orobitg deteriorating. Such a development has piqued the interest of Newcastle United.

The Magpies are bracing themselves for some busy transfer windows following the completion of the big takeover by the Public Investment Fund. To that end, a plethora of players has already been linked with Newcastle, with just about every position in the squad set to be bolstered.

Midfield has been a major problem area for Newcastle for some time now, with senior midfielder Jonjo Shelvey not being consistent enough. To that end, the Tyneside outfit have set their sights on Marcelo Brozovic, with a lucrative contract likely to be offered to the Croat. And now, Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has popped up on their radar.

Considering Busquets is still one of the best players in his position, he could be a fine short-term solution for Newcastle. However, the Magpies are not the only club tailing the 33-year-old at the moment, with Manchester City also keen on signing the Barcelona midfielder.

What now remains to be seen is if Newcastle end up launching the offensive for Busquets anytime soon. If not, it might not be too surprising to see Busquets making his way to Manchester City, where he could reunite with former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.
