Newcastle United have registered an interest in Bayer Leverkusen super-talent Florian Wirtz, who is expected to cost around €100 million.

According to a report from SportBild, Newcastle United have joined a wealth of clubs in the race to sign Florian Wirtz. The former traditional club of England was recently taken over by a Saudi-backed consortium, primarily under Crown Prince Mohamed Bin-Salman.

“MBS” wants Newcastle to get to the pinnacle of European football in the shortest time possible and is ready to spend big. They have been linked with multiple star players across Europe, with Wirtz joining that list.

Newcastle United had reportedly sent out a scout to watch the young Bayer Leverkusen talent in their derby game against 1. FC Koln this past weekend. The report does suggest that Wirtz isn’t likely to move on from Leverkusen in the near future, while the youngster could also cost in the region of €100 million.

Formerly of the Koln academy, the 18-year-old is one of the hottest prospects in world football at the moment. He had made his Bundesliga breakthrough last season, being involved in 11 league goals. But the player has performed at a whole new level under new coach Gerardo Seoane this term, taking part in 12 goals in as many games.

The teenager’s rapid rise to prominence has seen him make a breakthrough into the German national team. He has notched up four caps under Hansi Flick, though he has yet to participate in a single goal. Given his success so far, it won’t be surprising to see the youngster earn a big-money move away from Leverkusen in the near future.

However, Newcastle United’s lack of recent footballing pedigree in Europe might not make them a very appealing destination for Florian Wirtz. Reports already suggest that the youngster is considering a switch to Bayern Munich next season while Liverpool are also interested in the German international.

Fortunately for the Magpies, they have no shortage of options. While the young, emerging Wirtz might be an unrealistic target, NUFC are one of the top contenders to sign former Chelsea and Premier League superstar Eden Hazard, who could leave Real Madrid in the upcoming January transfer window.
