Newcastle United are tipped to leapfrog AC Milan in the race to sign Brest star Romain Favre in the January transfer window.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Newcastle United are ready to hijack AC Milan’s deal to sign Romain Favre. The Brest playmaker was linked with a move to San Siro for months, but a transfer did not materialise.

In the end, it appears Newcastle have emerged as the likeliest destination for the player, who is keen on getting his hands on the lucrative contract likely to be offered by the cash-rich Premier League outfit. The player himself is valued just at around €15-€18 million by Brest, despite having a long-term contract at the club.

Formerly of the Monaco academy, Faivre was identified as an ideal target for Milan in light of the upcoming African Cup of Nations that rules out Ismael Bennacer and Franck Kessie for the early parts of 2022. The player also had the desire to join the Rossoneri in an attempt to make a breakthrough at a higher level.

But it appears Newcastle could soon make the 23-year-old Frenchman one of their own, although there appears to have been no negotiations between any of the parties regarding the move. The Magpies, nevertheless, remain interested as part of their plan to shore up their options with quality players in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Tyneside outfit have been recently linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen starlet Florian Wirtz as well. The German, though, is much likely to join a bigger club, which has led to the club eying moves for established players with a slightly lower ceiling.

Romain Faivre falls into that category perfectly, having enjoyed a majestic debut campaign at Brest since joining from Monaco last summer. He was involved in 11 goals, helping his club survive the wrath of relegation. The 23-year-old has drawn a lot of praise due to his chance creation and versatility.

A left-midfielder by trade, Faivre can operate in a central midfield role, as a number ten and even on the opposite flank, if required. It makes him an appealing target for Newcastle United, as they look to bring in talented players who can help the club survive relegation before eyeing for bigger and better things next season.
