Liverpool have reportedly set their sights on AFC Ajax and Brazil forward Antony as they look to refresh their ageing squad in the upcoming transfer windows.

According to a report from Catalan publication El Nacional, Liverpool are looking at Ajax winger Antony as a potential future addition to their frontline as they look to bring in fresh faces into the squad.

Antony came through the ranks at Brazilian club Sao Paulo and made close to forty senior appearances before Ajax swooped him away in the summer of 2020. Having arrived in Amsterdam last year, the 21-year-old enjoyed a very promising debut campaign, scoring and assisting ten goals apiece from 46 appearances across all competition.

Antony has started the new season on an impressive note as well, having directly contributed to six goals in just ten games. The winger’s form has even led to him breaking into the Brazilian national team, with the youngster making three appearances for the Selecao in which he has scored once.

Antony’s rapid development over the past couple of years and his high potential has alerted several clubs across Europe. The likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid have all expressed an interest in the 21-year-old while reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are also touted to be among his suitors.

The latest addition to his ever-growing list of admirers are Liverpool. The Reds have one of the most fearsome attacking units comprising Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, with the trio looking close to their best after having failed to fire at their full capacity last season.

Salah, in particular, has been in blistering form in the ongoing campaign and is scoring goals for fun, having obliterated Manchester United with a hat-trick this past weekend. However, his contract is set to run out in eighteen months and despite his admission that he would like to continue at Liverpool, a breakdown in negotiations could lead to a parting of ways.

Even if he stays, all of Salah, Mane and Firmino are closing in on or are in their thirties and Liverpool could do with adding some young faces to their attacking line, making Antony very much a viable transfer target for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Along with the 21-year-old, RB Salzburg’s German prodigy Karim Adeyemi is also an option that is being looked at by the Merseyside giants.

The report also adds that Liverpool are admirers of Erling Haaland, but believe that a move for him would be unfeasible due to the demands of his agent, Mino Raiola. It now remains to be seen if the Reds do act on their supposed interest in Antony next summer when both Salah and Mane will have entered their thirties.
