Barcelona are reportedly keeping tabs on the contract situation of Jose Gaya, but the 26-year-old Spanish international keen on staying put at Valencia.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Superdeporte, Barcelona are closely monitoring the situation of Jose Gaya at Valencia, as he is set to enter the final 18 months of his contract with Los Che. However, the 26-year-old Spanish international’s preference would be to stay put at the Mestalla, which comes as a blow for the Catalan giants.
Jose Gaya has been with Valencia practically all throughout his time as a footballer, having joined their academy in 2006. And just six years down the line, he even made his first-team debut for Los Che, when he was all of 17. Since then, he has come leaps and bounds, becoming the club captain at the onset of last season following the departure of Dani Parejo.
To date, the 26-year-old, who is also a regular feature for the Spanish national side, has made 265 appearances for Valencia, chipping in with six goals and 31 assists in the process. His continuous upward trajectory has piqued the interest of a number of top clubs over the years, with Barcelona, in particular, being long-term suitors.
In fact, Barcelona had been considering the possibility of snapping up Gaya in the summer transfer window as well before choosing to promote Alejandro Balde instead. However, Balde is still very young while Jordi Alba is in the twilight of his career, which is perhaps why the Blaugrana are still in pursuit of the Valencia captain.
Apart from Gaya, Barcelona have also been linked with Robin Gosens, among a few others. However, it looks like the Spanish international is the favoured option among the decision makers at Camp Nou.
In fact, as per the report, Barcelona are keeping a close watch on his contract situation at Valencia, with Gaya set to enter the final 18 months of his contract with Los Che, which is starting to alert the Blaugrana as well as other prospective suitors. And if he does not commit his future to his current club, Barcelona could well launch a move for the 26-year-old.
However, as per the report, Gaya’s preference would be to stay put at the Mestalla, which comes as a big blow for the Catalan giants. What Barcelona must now hope for is that Valencia’s financial woes force them to cash in on their captain, otherwise they can end their hopes of snapping him up.
