Newcastle United have reportedly made contact with the entourage of defender Wesley Fofana and could make an offer to Leicester City imminently.

According to reports from French outlet RMC Sport, Newcastle United have identified Wesley Fofana as a priority signing in the January window, having already contacted the player’s entourage. The new Magpies’ ownership wants to bring in some notable names and make an attractive offer to Leicester City for the defender.

It’s not been even a week since Saudi’s PIF took control of Newcastle United, and due to their cash-rich ownership, the club are already linked with a host of names for the next window. Presumably, in January, the Magpies are expected to splash money in the market to strengthen their squad, while Steve Bruce is also set to be sacked.

The club are already linked with many star names, including Raheem Sterling, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey. There are also other players connected with a transfer to the club via multiple media outlets.

The latest name linked with a move is 20-year-old Foxes defender Wesley Fofana, as the Magpies are expected to make an offer imminently. According to the report, the club have already contacted the player’s entourage and could convince them a move would be the best thing for the future.

Fofana, signed from Saint-Etienne in the summer of 2020, has baeen a revelation under Brendan Rodgers, and many expected him to play a key role for the Foxes this season. However, a nasty injury in pre-season ruled him out for the long-term, although some reports claim he could be back playing as soon as January of 2022.

Realistically, with the kind of injury Fofana suffered, he might be out for the season and be available only next season. In any case, there seems to be some seriousness in Newcastle’s pursuit of the Frenchman, although in any case, the transfer negotiations might not be straightforward.

Fofana has a long term contract with Leicester until 2025, and as recent dealings suggest, the Foxes will likely ask for premium transfer fees. While Newcastle are not expected to baulk at any asking price, convincing Rodgers’ side to sell might prove difficult.

Alternatively, Leicester could offer Fofana a new deal to renew his terms at the club, at least postponing Newcastle’s interest. Either way, the French defender has a long term future at any club, after the 20-year-old’s performances last season showed immense promise.
