Manchester United are reportedly keen on signing Wilfred Ndidi from fellow Premier League giants Leicester City this January.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Manchester United’s search for a holding midfield reinforcement has taken them to fellow Premier League club Wilfred Ndidi, with the 24-year-old emerging as a potential option for the January transfer window.

Wilfred Ndidi joined Leicester City from KRC Genk in January 2017 and has since gone on to become the sought-after replacement for N’Golo Kante. Now widely regarded as one of the best holding midfielders on show in the Premier League, the Nigerian international has become a mainstay for the Foxes.

To date, the 24-year-old has amassed 185 appearances for Leicester, chipping in with nine goals and 11 assists in the process. His progress over the last half a decade or so has invariably piqued the interest of some of the biggest clubs in the Premier League, and beyond, with Manchester United currently hot on his trails.

Manchester United made an inexplicable decision to not bolster their midfield in the summer transfer window, wherein they aggressively reinforced their attack in the form of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo while also bringing in a world class defender in Raphael Varane.

However, as has been crystal clear in the early stages of the 2021/22 season, the soft underbelly for the Red Devils has been their midfield unit, with the lack of a natural holding midfield hitting them hard. Indeed, with Nemanja Matic no longer a spring chicken, Manchester United are in need of a long-term successor for the Serb.

With neither Scott McTominay nor Fred exactly a defensive midfielder, it is evident that the Premier League heavyweights must dip their toes in the transfer market for one, with Marcelo Brozovic emerging as one of the options of late. And Ndidi is also a viable target for Manchester United.

In fact, as per Fichajes, it looks like the Red Devils are prioritising a move for the 24-year-old ahead of someone like Brozovic, with a January move being lined up. However, Leicester might well be reluctant to part with a key player midway through the season and it remains to be seen if United can somehow reach an agreement over a winter transfer.
