Arsenal are keeping tabs on Todd Cantwell and could make a move for the Norwich star next summer, possibly on a free transfer.

According to Fichajes, Arsenal continues to keep tabs on Todd Cantwell’s progress at Norwich City as the attacking midfielder runs down his contract. The Gunners would be hoping to get him on a free transfer next year.

Arsenal outlined their newest transfer policy in the summer when they signed six players, all under 23. Mikel Arteta seems to be getting his way at the club after a difficult first eighteen months into his managerial reign. Along with technical director Edu, the manager identified and signed their preferred targets.

It’s a major rebuild undertaken by the club after many years of underwhelming signings made in the transfer market at a high cost. Last weekend, Arsenal fielded a very young squad in the Premier League, and it’s a trend that seeming to be brewing at the Emirates.

The club opted to sign these young stars over established, experienced professionals, as Arteta wants his brand of stars executing his grand ideas. Arsenal are expected to continue making similar signings in the next windows, and one player they have an eye on is Todd Cantwell of Norwich City.

Cantwell has been at Norwich for many seasons and has been a regular for the club in the Premier League and previous Championships seasons. However, the attacking midfielder has not indicated signing a new deal at the club, meaning he could leave on a free in the summer of 2022 when his current contract expires.

There have been reports of a year’s extension, although it’s unclear whether the club will exercise the option. Either way, Cantwell is looking at leaving the side, and if a club like Arsenal come into the mix, he’ll surely be tempted to sign up. Aston Villa were also interested in the summer, but a move never transpired.

Cantwell’s contract standoff has seen him start some games this season from the bench, and as the season progresses, he might be marginalised. However, he has already built a reputation based on his talent, and the Gunners might continue to keep tabs.

Despite signing Martin Odegaard in the summer from Real Madrid and the presence of Emile Smith Rowe in the attacking midfield positions, Arteta would like to have more competition in the team. Moreover, he sees Smith Rowe as a left-sided attacker, leaving the Norwegian as the only out-and-out option for the no.10 role.

Signing Cantwell will certainly give Arteta more options and variety in the attacking areas, while the Norwich City star can also cover left midfield or even centrally if required. The 23-year-old could be an interesting signing because of his age and how well he could fit into the latest transfer policy adopted by the Gunners.
