Real Madrid are reportedly weighing up the prospect of signing 27-year-old Spanish international Aymeric Laporte from Manchester City.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Real Madrid’s endeavour to bolster the heart of their defence has taken them to Manchester City. The Spanish giants are keen on signing Aymeric Laporte, and are pondering a move for the 27-year-old Spanish international.

Laporte is widely regarded as one of the best defenders on show in the Premier League, despite seeing his role at Manchester City get reduced last season. At the onset of the 2021/22 campaign, though, the player seems to have regained his spot as the first-choice centre-back alongside Ruben Dias and his stock is on the rise again.

So far this term, Laporte has made six appearances and has even scored a goal. His stature is also on the rise in international football, having established himself as a regular for the Spanish national side. With things seemingly on track again for the 27-year-old, the clubs are starting to line up as well, with Real Madrid once again hot on his trails.

Real Madrid had been heavily linked with a potential summer move for Laporte before choosing to make David Alaba the only defensive addition of the window. However, the Merengues now seem to be accepting that they need to bring in another central defensive option at the earliest possible opportunity, with the twin departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane hitting them hard.

Indeed, Eder Militao has not been as consistent as required, although he is still viewed as a long-term solution at the back. The bigger issue pertains to Nacho, who appears to be a backup option at best and does not really perform consistently when playing game in game out.

With that in mind, it is clear that Real Madrid must sign a centre-back, either in January or next summer, with the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Alessandro Bastoni and Niklas Sule among those who have been linked with them. And now, Laporte has also once again emerged as a viable target for Los Blancos.

While the report does not divulge much, it does mention that Real Madrid are considering a move. With that in mind, it remains to be seen if they do end up launching the offensive for the 27-year-old Spanish international in either of the coming transfer windows.
