Barcelona are reportedly keen on securing the services of Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani on a loan deal in January.

According to Spanish journalist Jose Alvarez on El Chiringuito TV, Barcelona appear to be stepping up their efforts to sign Edinson Cavani in the January transfer window. And the Catalan giants seem to be eyeing a loan move for the the Manchester United striker.

Edinson Cavani has been quite an asset for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since joining Manchester United as a free agent on deadline day in the summer of 2020. The veteran striker chipped in with some key contributions last season, ending the campaign as one of the top scorers for the Red Devils.

However, his role has evidently reduced at the onset of the 2021/22 season following the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. In addition, injury issues have meant that Cavani has started just one game so far, making a further three appearances off the bench. However, despite the reduction in his role at Manchester United, the 34-year-old is a popular figure in the transfer market, with Barcelona keen on signing him.

Barcelona were first linked with Cavani on deadline day in the summer transfer window before a move failed to materialise. However, the interest in the veteran Manchester United striker does not seem to have waned much in recent times.

In fact, Barcelona recently joined the race to sign the Uruguayan international once again, with Real Madrid also being linked with him. The interest from the Blaugrana, meanwhile, does make sense, considering just how frugal they have been in the final third in the early stages of the season.

Luuk de Jong, who has been the first-choice striker so far in the absence of Sergio Aguero and Martin Braithwaite, has been abysmal for the most part, with his acquisition recently being slammed by Barcelona legend Luis Suarez Miramontes. With that in mind, Cavani is a viable target for Barcelona, who want to sign him on loan from Manchester United in January.

That brings about a complicated situation for Manchester United, with Cavani in the final year of his deal with the club. So, if they do agree to loan Cavani to Barcelona, it would behoove them to tie him down to a new contract before he departs. For now, the Catalan giants appear to be eyeing a temporary signing of the 34-year-old and it remains to be seen if the transfer sees the light of the day.
