Real Madrid are reportedly facing stiff competition from local rivals Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Your Tielemans from Leicester City.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Real Madrid are no longer the only La Liga club to be eyeing a potential swoop of Youri Tielemans. Atletico Madrid are also interested in signing the Leicester City midfielder over a move in next summer’s transfer window.

Youri Tielemans has established himself as one of the best playmakers in the Premier League since joining Leicester City from AS Monaco. Initially signed on a loan deal in the second half of the 2018/19 season, the Foxes chose to sign the Belgian international permanently in the summer of 2019 following a brilliant temporary stint at the King Power Stadium.

The 24-year-old has not looked back since, becoming a pivotal player for Leicester over the last couple of years. To date, Tielemans has made 119 appearances for the Midlands club while chipping in with 18 goals and 21 assists along the way. His progress has caught the attention of some of the biggest clubs in the world including Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

Real Madrid hold a long-standing interest in Tielemans, having first been linked with him when he was still at Anderlecht. The interest has only grown further since his move to Leicester, with the pursuit being understandable, considering the advancing age of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

So while Eduardo Camavinga is likely to be a long-term solution in midfield, getting Tielemans in will create a solid core for years to come including the Belgian international, Camavinga and Federico Valverde. However, Real Madrid now face stiff competition from local rivals Atletico Madrid for his signature.

The reigning La Liga champions bolstered their midfield unit this past summer by signing Rodrigo De Paul. However, with Hector Herrera seemingly not being in the plans of Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid could well be entering the market for a midfielder for a second successive summer.

With that in mind, Tielemans is a viable target for Los Rojiblancos, who could be setting up a transfer battle for his services alongside Real Madrid. With the 24-year-old previously admitting that he would be open to leaving Leicester City for a big move in future, both the Spanish giants would fancy their chances of snapping him up next summer.
