Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are involved in the race to sign Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic.

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, as relayed by Get Italian Football News, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are keeping a close eye on the situation of Marcelo Brozovic. The Inter Milan midfielder has his contract at Giuseppe Meazza expiring at the end of the season, putting a host of top clubs across Europe on red alert.

Inter and Brozovic’s representatives have started talks over a potential contract extension. But the player is demanding a hefty €6 million per season which is something the club cannot afford, even though the owners, Zhang Family, are confident of convincing him to lower his demands in favour of an extended stay in Milan.

The whole situation is being followed by Manchester United, who have been linked with a move for Brozovic for quite some time now. It appears the Croatian international has been identified as a cost-effective alternative to the likes of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips, who is set to cost around €70 million next summer.

But the Red Devils are set to face stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants have had problems of their own in the midfield unit, with new coach Nuno Espirito Santo failing to find a reliable partner for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park.

Oliver Skipp has lost his footing since an impressive start to the campaign while Harry Winks simply doesn’t offer enough to the table. The club is also considering a sale for Dele Alli next summer. As such, the Lilywhites are ready to set their sights on Brozovic, who brings a wealth of experience, having featured in 250 competitive appearances for Inter Milan.

Most importantly, the veteran midfielder is a capable operator who knows how to orchestrate things in possession. It should allow him to add a new dimension in the Spurs midfield, should they sign him.

The same can be said for Manchester United as well, with Brozovic equipped with the exact qualities that could make him an upgrade over Fred and Scott McTominay. At the age of 28, the former Dinamo Zagreb star also has a few years ahead of him and his mix of experience and ability make him an ideal replacement for the ageing Nemanja Matic.

Hence, it will be interesting to see how this Brozovic transfer saga transpires over the coming months. Inter certainly need to move swiftly in their attempts to sign a new contract with the midfielder, who will be eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement within a couple of months.
