Real Madrid are reportedly keeping tabs on the progress of 22-year-old Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez, who impressed recently in a game against Barcelona.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid are interested in signing Darwin Nunez in a future transfer window. The Spanish giants have been closely monitoring the progress of the 22-year-old Benfica striker since November and have been left impressed by his display against Barcelona this week.

Darwin Nunez joined Benfica from Almeria in the summer of 2020 and has since made massive progress in his career. In his maiden campaign with the Portuguese giants, the Uruguayan striker took his time to get going but excelled after overcoming the teething problems.

His campaign in 2021/22, though, has been off to flier, with six goals in seven appearances so far. Most recently, the 22-year-old was in fine form as Benfica handed a 3-0 trouncing to Barcelona, which has left the Blaugrana’s bitter rivals Real Madrid, in particular, left impressed.

As per the report, Real Madrid have had their sights set on Nunez for quite some time now, having first scouted him back in November. And the Merengues have remained hot on the trails of the Uruguayan striker all this while, with his display in the thrashing of Barcelona only strengthening their resolve of making a move for him.

The interest from Real Madrid makes sense as well, considering Karim Benzema is approaching the final phase of his career. While the Frenchman is going strong, it is imperative for Los Blancos to lay down a succession plan for him, an outlook that has seen them pursue a move for Erling Haaland.

However, Haaland will be highly sought-after next summer, when the release clause in his Borussia Dortmund contract comes into effect. With that in mind, it makes sense for Real Madrid to keep their options open, making Nunez a viable target.

The report adds that the Spanish giants are keenly monitoring his development and are weighing up the possibility of making a move in the future. What now remains to be seen is if the 22-year-old continues his upwards trajectory and if Real Madrid firm up their interest in him in due course.
