Manchester United and Everton are reportedly both interested in securing the services of Aberdeen’s teenage right-back Calvin Ramsay.

According to an exclusive report from The Sun, Manchester United have entered the race to sign teenage defender Calvin Ramsay from Scottish giants Aberdeen, with the 18-year-old also a transfer target for Everton.

Ramsay is a product of the Aberdeen youth academy. The 18-year-old right-back has made an excellent progression through the youth ranks before breaking into the first-team in March earlier this year. He has since continued his development with the senior side, establishing himself as a regular starter at right-back for the Dons.

Indeed, despite being just 18 years of age, Ramsay has featured in 14 games across all competitions for Aberdeen, contributing with a highly impressive tally of six assists. The young defender has also broken into the Scotland Under-21 national team as well, making a solitary appearance for the side in September.

Ramsay’s steady progress and development at the Pittodrie has led to him attracting interest from down south, with Everton having emerged as a suitor for the teenage right-back. Now, the Toffees have been joined by fellow Premier League club Manchester United in pursuit of the 18-year-old.

Everton have an issue in the right-back slot as captain Seamus Coleman is entering the final phase of his career and has struggled with various fitness issues in recent times. Jonjoe Kenny is available but does not seem to be favoured by manager Rafael Benitez while the likes of Ben Godfrey and Alex Iwobi are not naturals in the position.

So, the Merseyside giants are hoping to address the issue at the earliest possible with the signing of Ramsay, who can act as an understudy to Coleman at Goodison Park before eventually assuming the mantle of the No. 1 right-back. However, they are now set to face competition from bitter rivals Manchester United for the forward’s signing.

It is no secret that Manchester United spent a good chunk of the summer pursuing a new right-back, with Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier having been on the radar. A move, though, never materialised, leaving manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to hold on to Diogo Dalot as a cover for first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

However, as evidenced in their recent game against Villarreal, Dalot is not convincing enough. Furthermore, with Real Madrid interested in signing him, Manchester United will need to bring in a replacement to add depth and cover in the right-back slot, making Ramsay a viable target for the 20-time English champions.

Any move for Ramsay would likely have to wait though considering that he signed a new long-term deal with Aberdeen earlier this year, extending his stay at the club till 2024. Nonetheless, the lure of playing for esteemed clubs like Manchester United or Everton could prove too tempting to turn down for the 18-year-old.
