Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in Brentford striker Ivan Toney and can make a summer swoop for him if the Bees get relegated next year.

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham are considering a summer swoop for Brentford target-man Ivan Toney after his brilliant start to life in the Premier League, but a move is only possible if Brentford get relegated to the Championship next year.

The 25-year-old started his career in lower leagues with Northampton United before moving on to join Newcastle United. His time with the Magpies was a mixed bag and mostly spent out on loan, with stints at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Wigan Athletic, and Scunthorpe United before finally joining Peterborough United permanently in 2018.

Toney progressed leaps and bounds with the Posh and produced an impressive tally of 49 goals in 94 games during his two-year stint with the League One outfit. Toney was then picked up by Championship outfit Brentford in the summer of 2020 as a replacement for Ollie Watkins.

And the 25-year-old flourished in his first season with the Bees as he took the Championship by storm, racking up 31 goals and 10 assists from 45 Championship appearances, breaking the record for the most goals scored in a single Championship campaign and helping the Bees to achieve promotion to the Topflight.

The Englishman has carried his great form into this campaign under the shiny lights of the Premier League and has inspired his side to pick up brilliant results early in the season. He has scored two goals and assisted twice from six league appearances thus far.

As things stand, Spurs only have Harry Kane as the out-and-out centre-forward in their senior squad. Tottenham loaned Carlos Vinicius from Benfica last term to offer backup to Kane but opted against signing him on a permanent basis. The club hierarchy did not add another striker this summer as they were confident to hang onto Kane despite heavy interest from Man City.

However, Kane has since struggled, and he is currently goalless in five Premier League appearances after failing to score against Arsenal on Sunday. It is understood that Spurs will look to address the issue next summer, and Ivan Toney is one of the names on their radar.

Toney would certainly be an exciting addition for Spurs. He is a typical predatory centre-forward. A dominant force in the opponent penalty box who uses his well-built physique and agility to hold off defenders, he is good at linking up with other forwards as well and puts an impressive work rate off the ball.

He can beat off his marker very easily with his pace, dribbling and subtle intelligent movements which allows him to create space for himself and his teammates. Above all, his conversion rate in front of goal is what makes him stand out.

However, Toney is under contract with Brentford until 2025, which puts the Bees in a strong position. And with the red-hot form he is in there should not be any shortage of suitors. It now remains to be seen whether Spurs push ahead with their interest in Toney or move for alternate targets.

I don’t want to hear who we are going to sign in January or next summer, all I want to hear is Levy and Lewis are selling the club, I just want those two out NOW.
