Everton could reportedly rekindle their interest in Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek in January after a failed attempt to sign him in the summer.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton could consider the possibility of making a move for Manchester United fringe star Donny van de Beek in the January transfer window after having been rebuffed in their attempts to land him last month.

Van de Beek arrived at Manchester United in the summer last year from AFC Ajax amid much anticipation. But the move has hardly worked out as planned for the player and the club. The 24-year-old has struggled to carve out a place in the starting XI at Old Trafford, having had to feature mostly off the bench.

Indeed, van de Beek started just four Premier League games in his debut campaign and is yet to feature from kickoff in any of Manchester United’s five league outings. Given his situation, the Netherlands international had been linked with an exit in the summer transfer window, with Everton emerging as a suitor.

The Toffees were keen on landing the Dutchman and a move was said to be close to completion before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to block the transfer. However, with his situation not improving at Manchester United, Everton are now reconsidering a move for the 24-year-old Ajax ace in the winter transfer window.

The Toffees’ midfield department lacks quality beyond Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, with the likes of Andre Gomes, Tom Davies not able to perform consistently while Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Fabian Delph have been struggling with injuries.

Furthermore, with James Rodriguez now departing the club, there is room for another midfielder to join the squad. A move for Newcastle United’s Sean Longstaff is being mooted. But, someone like van de Beek would bring much more quality to the table, along with his ability to score goals from midfield.

The 24-year-old looked fairly solid in Manchester United’s latest contest against West Ham in the Carabao Cup, which they ended up losing. However, with game-time hard to come by and with the World Cup a year away, van de Beek has been urged to leave if he is to stand a chance of making it to the Netherlands squad.

It now remains to be seen if Everton do make an approach for the 24-year-old in the winter window or decide to explore other options. It will also be interesting to see if Manchester United would be open to letting the midfielder join a league rival, midway through the season.
