Ligue 1 heavyweights Lyon are reportedly eyeing Real Madrid outcast Isco as a potential replacement for Houssem Aouar.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Isco’s constantly declining status at Real Madrid has done nothing to detract potential suitors from his pursuit. The latest European giant to have joined the race to sign the 29-year-old midfielder are Lyon, who are scouring the transfer market for potential replacements for Houssem Aouar.

Isco arrived at Real Madrid from Malaga as a promising young midfielder in the summer of 2013. However, in the eight years that he has spent at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Spanish international has struggled to string together a run of starts, let alone become a first-choice option for any of his managers.

To date, the 29-year-old has made 340 appearances for Real Madrid, a large chunk of which have come from the bench, owing to the presence of stalwarts like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. As a result, Isco has constantly been linked with a potential departure from the club, although that has never really seen the light of the day.

Of late, Serie A giants Juventus and AC Milan have been reported to be in pursuit of the Spanish midfielder, with Italy constantly being mooted as his next destination. And now, another European heavyweight in Lyon have joined the race to sign Isco.

The report mentions that Lyon are eyeing Isco as a potential replacement for Houssem Aouar, whose future continues to be a subject of constant speculation despite staying put at the club beyond the summer transfer window.

Indeed, Aouar was heavily linked with a move away from Lyon this past summer, with some of the biggest clubs in Europe being keen on signing him before a move failed to materialise. However, Tottenham have recently been touted as a potential destination once again, meaning Lyon need to be prepared for the scenario that he departs the club.

To that end, Isco is surely a viable target for the Ligue 1 outfit, seeing as at 29, he ought to provide some of the best years of his career if he can rediscover his peak form. For now, the French giants have simply set their sights on the Real Madrid outcast and it remains to be seen if a move sees the light of the day.
