Real Madrid and Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing 27-year-old German defender Matthias Ginter from Borussia Monchengladbach.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Matthias Ginter could be on his way out of Borussia Monchengladbach next summer as a free agent. The 27-year-old is the subject of interest from Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur over a potential Bosman move.

Matthias Ginter has established himself as one of the best defenders on show in Bundesliga since joining Borussia Monchengladbach from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2017. Over the last four years, the German international has grown in importance for both club and country and is now a revered figure across Europe.

To date, the 27-year-old has made 152 appearances for Gladbach, chipping in with 10 goals and five assists along the way. However, the Bundesliga outfit are in a precarious position over his future, as he has entered the final year of his contract. The potential of him becoming a free agent now seems to have alerted a number of clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid and Tottenham.

The interest from Real Madrid makes a world of sense, despite the arrival of David Alaba. That is because the Austrian international could utilised in one of several positions going forward, leaving Eder Militao and Nacho as the only other reliable centre-backs at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal.

With Nacho on the wrong side of 30, it is hardly surprising that another centre-back would be a welcome addition at Real Madrid, who have been linked with the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Wesley Fofana and Niklas Sule, among others. The interest from Tottenham, on the other hand, is quite interesting.

Spurs signed Cristian Romero from Atalanta this past summer, with the Argentine international arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as a long-term replacement for Toby Alderweireld. In addition, Nuno Espirito Santo has the likes of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga at his disposal for the central defensive berths.

So, unless Tottenham offload a centre-back, there appears to be no vacant spot for another addition in the form of Ginter, even if he is an attractive prospect as a potential free agent. Meanwhile, apart from Real Madrid and Spurs, Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on signing Ginter.

PSG have also been reported to be in the market for a centre-back lately, having joined Real Madrid in pursuit of Rudiger. As for his situation at Gladbach, it remains to be seen if the Bundesliga club can tie the 27-year-old down to a new deal or if he embarks on a fresh adventure soon.
