Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly battling Real Madrid in the race to sign Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger next summer.

According to a report by Goal, the race to sign Antonio Rudiger keeps getting more interesting by the day. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are keeping a close watch on the situation around the German defender, who is currently in the final year of his contract with the Blues.

Antonio Rudiger joined Chelsea from AS Roma in the summer of 2017 and has since been on a topsy turvy ride at the club. Currently enjoying the best spell of his career so far, the German centre-back has been a player reborn under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel, becoming a key figure for the Blues.

To date, Rudiger has made 155 appearances for Chelsea while chipping in with seven goals and three assists along the way. The west Londoners, though, are in a precarious position over his future as he has entered the final year of his contract at the club. This has, in turn, alerted Real Madrid and PSG to his potential availability on a free transfer.

Real Madrid lost their two most important defenders in the summer transfer window in the form of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane. However, they chose to bring in only one potential central defensive option in David Alaba, which seems to have left Carlo Ancelotti short of quality options.

Indeed, apart from Alaba, Eder Militao and Nacho are the only reliable options at the disposal of the Real Madrid boss, which is why signing a centre-back is now imperative, with Rudiger being monitored over a potential Bosman move. The interest from PSG, on the other hand, is surprising.

That is because Mauricio Pochettino already has three world class centre-backs to choose from after the arrival of Ramos from Real Madrid. With Abdou Diallo also at his disposal, there really does not appear to be in need of another central defender. So, from Rudiger’s perspective, a move to Real Madrid would suit him better if he does leave Chelsea next summer.

As for the Blues, they continue to scramble to tie the German international down to a new contract, although very little progress has been made on that front. For now, Real Madrid and PSG continue to track his situation at Chelsea and it remains to be seen if Rudiger departs Stamford Bridge as a free agent next summer.
