Barcelona are reportedly weighing up the possibility of signing 26-year-old Italian international Alessio Romagnoli on a free transfer next year.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona have once again set their sights on Alessio Romagnoli, this time over a move in next summer’s transfer window. The Catalan giants are keen on signing the 26-year-old Italian international on a free transfer once his deal with AC Milan runs out.

Alessio Romagnoli joined AC Milan from AS Roma in the summer of 2015 and has since made a lot of progress in his career. Such was his growth trajectory that the player was even named as the club captain a few years ago, while he established himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A.

However, the turn of the year has not been kind on the 26-year-old, who has lost his spot in the side to Fikayo Tomori. And after entering the final year of his contract with AC Milan, Romagnoli is looking increasingly likely to depart San Siro as a free agent. The Italian international does not have a shortage of suitors either, with Barcelona currently in his pursuit.

Barcelona did bolster the heart of their defence in the summer transfer window by signing Eric Garcia. However, the need for a left-footed centre-back is cropping up due to the decline in Clement Lenglet’s performance levels as well as the fact that Samuel Umtiti is essentially surplus to requirements.

With the French duo not a major part of Ronald Koeman’s plans, offloading them and getting in a left-footed central defender would be a prudent move for Barcelona. To that end, the Blaugrana have been linked with Aymeric Laporte, Mohammed Salisu and a few others in recent times.

Romagnoli, too, is a viable target for Barcelona, who would definitely find his impending status of a free agent to be attractive. That the Italian international would also arrive at the peak of his powers further makes him an option worth considering.

For now, Romagnoli has once again become the subject of interest for Barcelona, who could make good use of Joan Laporta’s healthy relationship with Mino Raiola to land the 26-year-old. Having said that, it remains to be seen if a Bosman move sees the light of the day next summer.
