Bayern Munich have reportedly started working on signing Chelsea forward Timo Werner next year, with a January move a real possibility.
According to Football Insider, Bayern Munich are reportedly planning a January swoop for Chelsea striker Timo Werner, and a transfer is believed to be already in the works behind the scenes.
The Bundesliga giants are exploring the transfer market for a striker to act as a cover and compete with their talisman Robert Lewandowski and probably replace him in the longer term. The Bavarians are very keen on Werner – who they have identified as a ‘top target’ should they fail to lure Erling Haaland from Dortmund or Lewandowski refuses to extend his stay at Allianz Arena.
The Polish international was said to be open to leaving Bayern during the summer despite his incredible goal-scoring record, which sees him netting eight goals in five matches already. However, with his contract winding up in June 2023, it has become a big cause of concern for the Die Roton.
The ideal replacement would be Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland, whose phenomenal goal scoring record speaks for himself. The Norwegian is regarded as the next big thing and can seamlessly fill in the shoes left by the possible departure of Lewandowski. Bayern have established a legacy by snatching elite players from their league rivals, and Haaland may follow in their footsteps.
But any move will cost a lot of fortune and will be subject to a transfer war next summer when the release clause in his contract gets activated. Werner, on the other hand, provides Bayern with a relatively cheaper alternative. Furthermore, Sport1 understands that the “Sports360” agency has recently advised Werner, the same firm having Nagelsmann, Süle, and Dayot Upamecano as their clients.
After several prolific campaigns in Bundesliga for RB Leipzig, Werner was tipped for greater things when Chelsea beat stiff competition to secure a £47.5 million move to Stamford Bridge last summer. However, things didn’t turn out very well, and the striker endured a torrid debut campaign.
Although he registered 12 goals and provided 15 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions, he struggled to convince the new Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel that he’s the man to lead the line for the Blues. The return of Lukaku for a club-record fee has sent Werner further down the pecking order.
Werner has a proven track-record back in Germany during his four-year spell at Leipzig, where he netted 91 goals in 221 league appearances, could see him slot perfectly into Bayern’s plans with Thomas Muller and Lewandowski well into their thirties’.
Should the move go through, Werner will get the opportunity to reunite with Nagelsmann, who is in regular touch with the player and has pushed the Bayern hierarchy to sign the German international. The Bayern manager was the mastermind behind the forward’s highly prolific tenure at RB Leipzig and certainly knows how to use him efficiently.
Werner still has some time on his hands to turn things around at Chelsea and has the backing of Tuchel to be a success alongside the new arrival Lukaku. However, if things don’t improve, returning to his native land into more familiar surroundings would be a wise move to rediscover his lost touch.
