Everton are prepared to sign Nathan Patterson in the next window after their bid for the right-back was rejected during the summer.

According to The Sun, Everton have a clear path towards signing Nathan Patterson, provided they meet Rangers’ asking price for the promising right-back. The Toffees saw a £5 million bid rejected in the summer, with Steven Gerrard’s side holding out for nearly £10 million, a figure the Merseysiders are considering.

Steven Gerrard labelled Everton’s £5 million bid a ‘joke’ as Rangers demanded nearly double that amount for Nathan Patterson. After showing the reluctance to pay that amount, the Toffees are now reportedly willing to meet the Scottish side’s demand and sign the right-back in January.

Patterson joined the Rangers academy back in 2009 and has gradually come up within the ranks. Last season could probably be considered a mini-breakthrough for the youngster, as he finished with 14 appearances in all competitions. He is very much a bit-part, fringe option, although he remains highly rated by Gerrard.

There were rumours of Liverpool’s interest in Patterson, although emerging reports suggest Jurgen Klopp might look at other options. It probably leaves Everton with a clear path to make a move for the 19-year-old right-back. A movement, however, will depend on both clubs agreeing on a transfer fee.

Everton have struggled to find depth in the right-back area and remain desperate to add the proper players. Seamus Coleman is the only senior figure and probably the only one fit for that position this season. Others like Alex Iwobi and Ben Godfrey have played there before but may not have the desired effect.

Moreover, Coleman is getting at the wrong side of his age bracket while also suffering from niggling injuries in recent seasons. However, this season, the Irish star has found playing time under Rafael Benitez and is likely to be the first choice under the Spaniard.

Even if Everton sign Patterson, he will still be considered for a backup role. He could be a project for the club for the medium to long-term. The Rangers starlet is an exciting prospect, highly rated across England and Scotland. He will be a good addition to Everton, as he could learn and adapt to life in the Premier League while providing depth in the right-back slot.
