Barcelona are reportedly prioritising a move for 23-year-old Spanish international Dani Olmo, with a move in 2022 set to be made.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Barcelona are keen on signing Dani Olmo on a priority basis at the turn of the year. The Catalan giants view the 23-year-old RB Leipzig midfielder as a long-term asset, although the Bundesliga club are reluctant to part ways with him.

Dani Olmo joined RB Leipzig from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2020 and has continued his progress at an impressive rate in Germany. A former member of Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia, the Spanish international has been a key player for club and country for some time now and impressed at UEFA Euro 2020 as well as the Tokyo Olympics.

As far as his stint with Leipzig is concerned, Olmo has made 62 appearances, chipping in with 12 goals and 13 assists along the way. His progress since leaving Barcelona has not gone unnoticed at Camp Nou, with the Blaugrana now keen on securing his services.

In fact, Barcelona had been hot on his trails on deadline day of the summer transfer window before a move failed to materialise, as time had run out for a deal to be completed. The Blaugrana, though, continue to be in his pursuit as they are short of numbers in the midfield unit.

While Ronald Koeman has talked up the prospect of Philippe Coutinho’s resurgence, the Brazilian cannot really be expected to deliver consistently on the basis of the evidence so far at the club. So, it is imperative that Barcelona bolster their creative ranks, with Olmo a viable target.

In fact, it has even been suggested that Barcelona are readying an offer to sign the 23-year-old in the January transfer window. In addition, there have been suggestions that personal terms will not be a problem, with the player himself keen on returning to the club, who are now prioritising a move for him.

RB Leipzig, on their part, do not prefer cashing in on Olmo, although their hand could be forced if they cannot agree a new deal with him, with his current contract set to run out in the summer of 2023. What now remains to be seen is if Barcelona can belatedly bring Olmo to Camp Nou this season.
