Real Madrid are reportedly hopeful of landing Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba on a free transfer next summer.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid are growing increasingly confident of snapping up Paul Pogba on a free transfer in next summer’s transfer window. However, Manchester United could put the French midfielder up for sale in the winter if he has not agreed to a new deal by the turn of the year.

Pogba is currently enjoying the best phase of his second spell with Manchester United, having arguably been their best player in 2021. The 28-year-old has kick-started the 2021/22 season in style as well, having provided seven assists in just four games so far.

Indeed, Pogba was on song in Manchester United’s latest game, as he provided two assists in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United. However, with the French midfielder now in the final year of his deal, the Red Devils are scrambling to reach an agreement over a renewal with their prized possession. The situation, though, has alerted Real Madrid over the prospect of a Bosman move.

Real Madrid hold a long-standing interest in Pogba, having also been in his pursuit back in 2016 when he chose to join Manchester United instead. The interest has not waned a lot since, although they have admired him from afar up until now. However, with the prospect of a free transfer looming, Los Blancos have leapt into action.

While the Spanish giants have already bolstered their midfield in the summer transfer window that has just passed in the form of Eduardo Camavinga, the fact that both Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are well into their thirties means it will be a prudent move to make a move for someone like Pogba.

Indeed, the likes of Dani Ceballos and Isco are expected to leave Real Madrid sooner or later means signing Pogba on a Bosman deal could be a masterstroke. And, recent reports have even suggested that the Manchester United midfielder himself prefers a move to Real Madrid if he runs down his deal at Old Trafford.

Now, the Merengues are increasingly confident of snapping up the 28-year-old if he has not signed a new contract by the turn of the year. Manchester United, though, will put Pogba up for sale if he has not penned a renewal by January, which could force Real Madrid to snap him up on a cut-price fee instead. An intriguing next few months beckon.
