Real Madrid are reportedly keen on signing French midfielder Paul Pogba from Manchester United on a free transfer next summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid have already started work on their target list for next summer’s transfer window. To that end, the Spanish giants are eager to secure the services of long-term target Paul Pogba on a free transfer, if he runs out his contract with Manchester United.

Pogba has been enjoying an excellent run of form in 2021, having established himself as one of the most pivotal players for Manchester United. Now into his sixth season at Old Trafford since returning from Juventus in the summer of 2016, the Frenchman has endured a topsy-turvy ride for the Premier League heavyweights.

Now, though, his place in the side is unquestionable, and he has made a stunning start to the season, with five assists in just three games so far. However, Manchester United are in a precarious position over his future, seeing as Pogba has entered the final year of his contract. Such a situation has piqued the interest of Real Madrid.

Real Madrid hold a long-standing interest in Pogba, having also been in his pursuit before he chose to return to Manchester United instead, back in 2016. The interest has not waned much since then, although Los Blancos have chosen to concentrate on other targets in the meantime.

This past summer, Real Madrid ended up signing Eduardo Camavinga from Stade Rennais, with the French prodigy being a part of the long-term solution in midfield. However, with both Luka Modric and Toni Kroos well into their thirties, it will be a prudent move for the Merengues to sign another midfielder next summer, especially with Isco and Dani Ceballos being emergency options at best.

To that end, Pogba is a viable target for Real Madrid, with the Manchester United midfielder himself open to joining them on a Bosman move next summer. And as per Defensa Central, Real Madrid are indeed weighing up a Bosman move for the 28-year-old, as Isco approaches the end of his time at the club.

However, Real Madrid could well have to battle Paris Saint-Germain in pursuit of the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner, with the Ligue 1 heavyweights also being his long-term suitors. Manchester United, meanwhile, will be eager to tie the Frenchman down to a new deal, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claiming he has held positive talks with the player on that front.
