Tottenham Hotspur have identified Barcelona defender Emerson Royal as a potential option this late in the window.

According to the latest column from Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur have set their sights on Emerson Royal. They are eyeing a late swoop for the Barcelona starlet, with new coach Nuno Espirito Santo determined to put an end to his woes in the right-back department.

Emerson returned to Barcelona this summer, after a successful spell with Real Betis. Spurs are hoping that the Catalans might be willing to give up the Brazilian on an initial loan deal. But in order to facilitate any transfer, the Londoners may have to offload their fringe players, including the current right-back option in Serge Aurier.

Formerly of Paris Saint-Germain, the Ivorian clearly has no future at the club. His inconsistencies since joining Tottenham have not pleased Nuno, though his departure could leave him with Matt Doherty as the only full-fledged option at right-back.

The Portuguese tactician, though, appears to have gotten lucky with the emergence of Japhet Tanganga. The young Englishman has been performing exceptionally well in these early parts of the campaign, starring in the opening day victory over Manchester City.

However, Nuno is keen on adding more depth in the right-back department, as he is more than aware of the fact that the long footballing season could force him to make chops and changes to his team, week in week out. Moreover, Doherty hasn’t performed well since joining from Wolves last summer. Emerson, to that end, should be an interesting alternative.

Formerly of Atletico Mineiro, the fullback was brought back from Real Betis by Barcelona this summer as they required an alternative for Sergino Dest. But with the Blaugrana also boasting the services of Oscar Mingueza and Sergi Roberto, Emerson’s prospects in Catalonia have come under question.

The 22-year-old defender has featured in only 27 minutes of football in the new season so far. And in light of his situation at Barcelona, Spurs are willing to provide the Brazilian with an opportunity to earn a more prominent role at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the ongoing season.

But it remains doubtful whether Barca would be keen on offloading Emerson having only recently acquired his services. And as iterated earlier, Spurs have to offload their fringe players in order to facilitate the move.

The Lilywhites have done well to offload Moussa Sissoko to Watford recently, but have still failed to find a new club for Tanguy Ndombele, though Barcelona incidentally have been linked with a move for the Frenchman.
