Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly resumed their interest in Uruguayan midfielder Nahitan Nandez, and claims from Italy suggest the move may stretch until the deadline day.

According to the reports in Tuttomercatoweb, Tottenham have re-entered the race to sign Cagliari midfielder Nahitan Nandez and are working to find an agreement ahead of a potential swoop before the summer window slams shut. The report claims that negotiations can rumble on until the final hours of the deadline day with several clubs in bidding war for the player.

The Uruguayan was set to leave the Sardinia outfit for Italian giants Inter Milan but the move stalled owing to differences in the player’s valuation. After selling Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi, the Nerazzurri were keen to fill the gaps left in their squad and have already brought in Edin Dzeko and Denzel Dumfries from Roma and PSV Eindhoven, respectively.

Before purchasing Dumfries they were heavily interested in Nandez, and negotiations reached the final stages but were put off by Cagliaria’s asking price. The failure to seal a move has left the player disappointed, and he’s now open to any escape route provided to him. The collapse has certainly alerted many potential suitors across the continent who are vying for the 25-year-old’s signature, including the likes of Atalanta, Leeds and West Ham.

After spending his developing years at Penarol – a local club in Uruguay, he was picked up by Argentine giants Boca Juniors. He established himself as one of South America’s most promising prospects. In 2019, he arrived in Europe sealing a switch to Cagliari.

Since arriving in Italy, Nandez has played a key role in Rossoblu’s survival for the last couple of seasons and has racked up 72 appearances, scoring four goals and assisting seven more in the process.

Nandez is an all-action midfielder who is very versatile can operate anywhere in midfield or even as a wing-back area if required. He has got excellent ball control and quick feet, enabling him to advance the play with his ball-carrying ability. Last campaign, he averaged 1.2 dribbles, took one shot, and laid one key pass per game, reflecting his creative impetus.

Along with his attacking endeavours, Nandez is a hard-working and tenacious player who always shows up with his defensive output as he completed 1.8 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 1.5 clearances. He is a ball-winner and doesn’t shy away from putting gritty work on the field for his team’s benefit.

Nandez would represent a great signing for the Lilywhites’. Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko are staring at uncertain futures at Tottenham while Tanguy Ndombele also looks set to leave after being frozen out by new boss Nuno Espirito Santo, it becomes necessary for the North London club to bolster their midfield options.

It is understood that Nahitan Nandez is only one of the names on Fabio Paratici’s midfielder shortlist, and it remains to be seen who Tottenham end up signing, if anyone, before the transfer window closes.
