Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly held informal talks with 23-year-old French international Houssem Aouar over a late move this summer.

According to a report by Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their efforts to sign Houssem Aouar before the summer transfer window slams shut. The Premier League heavyweights have held informal talks with the representatives of the 23-year-old French international and are hoping to move ahead with a move.

Houssem Aouar is widely regarded as one of the best young midfielder in France, having been a key figure for Lyon for the better part of the last four years or so. The 23-year-old has even broken into the French national side, although he has lost his place in recent times owing to a poor run of form in the last few months.

This summer, there has been widespread speculation surrounding the future of the youngster, who could be on his way out of the French club this summer. To date, Aouar has made 173 appearances for Les Gones, chipping in with 32 goals and as many assists along the way. And he has no shortage of suitors, with Tottenham in particular being hot on his trails.

The interest from Tottenham makes a lot of sense amid uncertainty surrounding the futures of Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Tanguy Ndombele. Ndombele, in particular, does not appear to be in the plans of Nuno Espirito Santo, who has barely utilised the French midfielder since arriving at the helm at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

With Ndombele being heavily linked with a summer exit, at least one spot in Spurs’ midfield unit could open up. This spot could be taken up by someone like Aouar, whose progressive outlook could work wonders alongside a player like Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, creating a more dynamic midfield unit for Tottenham.

The north Londoners have now stepped up their efforts to sign Aouar, having held informal talks with the representatives of the 23-year-old. And now, it looks like Tottenham could be set to make their move for the French international.

However, Aouar’s preference is to play for a club that can offer Champions League football, which is something Tottenham cannot. Having said that, he does not have any suitor playing in Europe’s top tier either, so it remains to be seen if he is willing to wait a year before leaving Lyon or if he ends up joining Tottenham instead.

Another signing Levy should make but probably won’t. A lot of talk coming from Spurs about all these quality players we’re in for, but not a lot of movement and signing of players that are ready to do a job for Spurs now, we’ve signed three out of the four that will play in future if we’re lucky.
