Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly willing to increase their offer for Pau Torres in order to tempt the Spaniard to move to London.

According to a report from Spanish publication AS, Tottenham are very interested in Villarreal defender Pau Torres and are prepared to boost the personal terms offered to the player after facing initial rejection.

Fabio Paratici is hoping to secure the deal for the highly-rated Spanish international and could go all out in convincing the player to move to London. As per the report, Tottenham have matched Villarreal’s asking price for the defender with a deal worth €55 million being agreed between both clubs only for Torres to ward off Spurs’ approach.

It is believed that Torres, a bit similar to Jules Kounde of Sevilla who also spurned the Lilywhites, has an aspiration to only move to a club competing in the Champions League while Spurs’ have only achieved a seventh-place finish which qualifies them for the newly-formed Uefa Europa Conference League.

This comes as a major blow to Spurs’ who are scouring the market for a defensive partner for their new summer signing, Cristian Romero and have identified Torres as a perfect quality option.

Last year, Torres was impressive both domestically and in Europe, helping the Yellow Submarine to secure their first major title by winning the Europa League. He built on that form internationally by capping off with a silver medal at the Olympics with Spain, after having helped La Roja to the semi-finals at the UEFA Euro 2020.

Pau Torres is a left-footed ball-playing centre-back who is good at ball progression out of the back but equally capable of handling his defensive duties superbly. Owing to his solid displays, he attracted interest from Manchester United and was on their shortlist before they eventually signed Raphael Varane from Real Madrid, who themselves are looking at Torres as an option.

The 24-year-old would be another excellent by Paratici at Tottenham and can potentially make an excellent pairing alongside Romero as both have a complementary set of attributes. Although Torres has an amazing positional sense and is intelligent while defending, he lacks physical build and could struggle to acclimatize to Premier League’s intense nature; in that case, Romero can very well compensate for it.

What now remains to be seen is whether Torres agrees to the new personal terms that will be offered or if Spurs’ have to face another disappointment.

We need to get these signings done asap, and remove all the dead wood too. The deals to get rid of the players we don’t want is taking far too long.
