Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an enquiry over the availability of Uruguayan midfielder Nahitan Nandez who is set to leave Cagliari.

According to a report from Sky Sport Italia, Tottenham Hotspur have lodged an initial enquiry with Serie A club Cagliari as they look to make a swoop for Uruguayan midfielder Nahitan Nandez.

The 25-year-old spent the formative years of his career at CA Ituzaingo and Penarol in his homeland of Uruguay before signing for South American giants Boca Juniors in 2017. Having spent two years with the Argentine outfit, Nandez moved to Italy in 2019, joining Cagliari.

Since arriving in Italy, Nandez has been a regular presence in the side for Cagliari, bagging 72 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals and setting up seven more. However, the 25-year-old Uruguayan international looks set to leave the club after recent incidents, which saw him fail to turn up for a friendly game in order to force a move away.

With Cagliari now ready to cut ties with the midfielder, there has been interest from the Premier League, with Leeds United having been linked quite heavily. Tottenham Hotspur, too, have now entered the fray for the signing of the Uruguayan international.

Tottenham have had an eventful transfer window so far, having signed Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil and Cristian Romero. While the Harry Kane saga continues to dominate the headlines, there is no denying that newly-appointed Managing Director of Football, Fabio Paratici, has done some astute business in the market so far.

More additions are certainly on the cards for the Lilywhites, with another defender being lined up, while a centre-forward would also be needed, irrespective of Kane’s future. Midfield is one area where Nuno Espirito Santo can boast of plenty of depth. Indeed, Tottenham have Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Tanguy Ndombele and youngster Oliver Skipp as options at his disposal.

However, it must be noted that Sissoko and Winks are staring at uncertain futures while Ndombele could find himself out of favour as well, having not been used in a single pre-season game by Nuno so far. Should one or more of the three left, it would open up a space in the middle of the park, which Nandez can fill.

A 41-time capped Uruguayan international, the 25-year-old has plenty of experience while his best years are still in front of him. Add to that his ability to play in midfield, and as a wing-back on the right side, Nandez would add to Tottenham’s squad depth. To that end, the Lilywhites are now said to have asked Cagliari about his availability, although Inter Milan are also in the race.

It remains to be seen if Spurs’ interest in the South American midfielder leads to something substantial in the coming weeks.
