Aston Villa are reportedly ready to stump up a €30 million bid for Spanish defender Mario Hermoso to ward off any potential interest from Everton or Arsenal.

According to reputed journalist Rudy Galetti, Aston Villa are very interested in signing defensive stalwart Mario Hermoso from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and are preparing a €30 million move to bring the 26-year-old Spanish international to Villa Park.

As per reports, Villa would like to buy another defender despite having already signed Axel Tuanzebe on a season-long loan from Manchester United. Hermoso has been judged to be surplus to requirements at Atletico Madrid.

This has obviously alerted numerous clubs, including ones in the Premier League likes Everton, Arsenal and Aston Villa, but Atletico have already stated that no deal less than £30 million will be considered as they are bound to give 20% part of any transfer fees to his former club Espanyol owing to a sell-on clause installed in defender’s contract.

Though Diego Simeone would like to retain the solid centre-half in La Liga, considering the dire financial state Atleti are in, they need to sell a couple of assets to balance the state of play.

After coming through the youth ranks at Real Madrid’s reputed Castilla academy, Hermoso had a loan spell at Real Vallodolid before signing for Espanyol; after spending two solid seasons with Espanyol, he caught the eyes of Atletico Madrid, who bought him two years ago. He struggled for minutes in the debut season but soon became a crucial cog in Simeone’s side.

The 26-year-old played a vital part for Atletico, helping them win the La Liga title. Last season he racked up 38 appearances in all comps for Los Rojiblancos, netting twice and also playing an assist in the process. As for Aston Villa, they already have a quality defensive roster at their discretion, so the big question arises as to why they want to add another defender.

Hermoso is an excellent ball-playing centre-half highly regarded for his tremendous passing ability. In many aspects, he is a better defender than Tyrone Mings, who is suspect to poor decision-making and lapse in concentration at times.

The Villans have already added Tuanzebe on loan from Manchester United to replace Bjorn Engels. It looks like Kourtney Hause will follow him out of Villa Park soon. This may leave Aston Villa vulnerable at the back. That’s why Dean Smith is looking to add another central defender to his squad in the form of Hermoso.

Hermoso’s versatility is another factor from which Villa could benefit massively in emergency circumstances. He can operate as a full-back thanks to his decent recovery pace or even in the defensive midfield role if required. He would be an excellent pairing alongside Ezri Konsa.

It is a bit of a no-brainer, and Aston Villa should move quickly to acquire the 26-year-old Spanish international’s services as there are many clubs interested in the prospect of signing a top-quality defender.
