Manchester United have reportedly rebuffed a £50 million approach from Inter Milan for misfiring striker Anthony Martial.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Manchester United have rejected an offer worth £50 million for star forward Anthony Martial from Serie A giants Inter Milan.

The 25-year-old Frenchman joined Manchester United in the summer of 2015 from AS Monaco as a teenage prodigy and took the Premier League by storm, scoring a fine goal on his debut against Liverpool and went on to enjoy an impressive first season in England. However, he hasn’t been able to produce the same level of displays on a consistent basis, barring the 2019/20 season when he had a fine run.

The last campaign was a disappointing one for Martial as he struggled to produce the desired level of performance in front of goal despite starting as the first-choice centre-forward at Manchester United. He eventually ended up losing his place to Edinson Cavani before an injury ruled him out for the season in March.

Back to full fitness now, Martial’s future had been thrown into doubt this summer as Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund due to the number of options at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s disposal in the final third.

This had sparked interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, while Inter Milan had shown an interest in the France international. The Serie A champions saw Martial as a replacement for former Manchester United forward Romelu Lukaku, who ended up returning to England, signing for Chelsea.

To that end, it has now emerged that the Italian giants were willing to front up £50 million for the French international. However, Manchester United, as per the report, have rebuffed their advances this summer, as they see Martial as an important part of the plans ahead of the new season.

With Edinson Cavani yet to return to training and Marcus Rashford sidelined for a while after undergoing surgery on his shoulder, Manchester United are lacking depth in the centre-forward department as things stand. So, Martial, in all likelihood, could be in line to feature when they kick off the season against Leeds on Saturday.

So, it makes sense that they would reject Inter Milan’s approach for Martial. However, while Manchester United have shown yet another vote of confidence in Martial, the 25-year-old will need to repay the faith with performances on the field. Another bad season, and those at Old Trafford might not be as generous again next summer.
