Arsenal are reportedly set to step up their interest in Marco Asensio and are prepared to a premium to swoop him away from Real Madrid.

According to a report by Spanish outlet El Gol Digital, Arsenal are intensifying their efforts to sign Marco Asensio in the summer transfer window. The 25-year-old Spanish forward, though, has not been put on the transfer list by Los Blancos, with Carlo Ancelotti including him in his plans for the upcoming season.

Marco Asensio has endured a roller-coaster of a ride since joining Real Madrid from RCD Mallorca in the summer of 2015. While he has often shown a lot of promise, there have also been moments where he has been listless, with his long-term knee injury – which sidelined him for almost the entirety of the 2019/20 season – hardly helping matters.

So far at Real Madrid, Asensio has amassed a tally of 37 goals and 22 assists in 193 appearances, which is a record that could do with some improvement. This summer, the 25-year-old was a part of the Spanish side that won silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. However, at club level, Asensio has question marks surrounding his Real Madrid future, with Arsenal among those courting him.

The interest from Arsenal is hardly surprising considering Willian is reportedly deemed to be surplus to requirements just one season after arriving from Chelsea. In addition, there are rumours pointing towards Reiss Nelson being likely to be loaned out amid interest from Crystal Palace.

Therefore, one could expect some room to be created for a new wide attacker this summer, which is where Asensio comes into the picture. Having said that, Arsenal are not the only club hot on the trails of the Real Madrid forward, with the likes of Manchester City, Everton, Leeds United and Leicester City also interested, in addition to Athletic Bilbao.

As per the report, though, Arsenal will have an uphill task in prising Asensio away from Real Madrid, who have no intention of cashing in on the player. Having said that, Arsenal are prepared to pay a premium for the Spaniard, which could potentially play into Los Blancos‘ hands, as they look to raise funds to sign Kylian Mbappe.

What now remains to be seen is if Arsenal launch the offensive for Asensio anytime soon and if they actually splash a big-money sum to secure his services. How the rest of the suitors react will also be interesting to see, with the Real Madrid ace clearly a popular figure.

  1. Arsenal should bring in some wonderful world class players to Emirates stadium. We are tired of speculation.
