Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an opening offer in excess of €20 million for Sampdoria’s Danish attacker Mikkel Damsgaard.

According to a report from La Reppublica, as relayed by Calciomercato, Tottenham Hotspur have made their first move to secure the signing of Sampdoria winger Mikkel Damsgaard with a bid in the upwards of €20 million.

Damsgaard signed for Sampdoria only last summer from boyhood club FC Nordsjaelland and enjoyed an impressive debut season. While a return of two goals and four assists 35 Serie A appearances don’t really stand out, the 21-year-old’s impact was beyond just numbers in his debut season in Italy.

As a result, Damsgaard got picked into the Denmark national team for the UEFA Euro 2020, where he emerged as one of the brightest young players, essaying a crucial role in his side’s surprise run to the semi-finals.

Damsgaard’s sudden rise to prominence over the past year or so has attracted a lot of admirers, with Tottenham Hotspur also one among them. The Lilywhites, under newly-appointed sporting director Fabio Paratici, seem to be focusing a great deal on the Italian market, having already signed Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta, while Cristian Romero is also close to making the switch from La Dea.

And, it seems like the north London outfit will continue to raid Serie A clubs for new players, with Damsgaard now seemingly next on the list. A move for the 21-year-old sense makes a lot of sense as well, considering that Tottenham lost Gareth Bale after the expiry of his loan spell while Erik Lamela has also departed, although Bryan Gil has been roped in from Sevilla.

Nonetheless, with Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn having had sub-par seasons last time out, adding someone like Damsgaard would help manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Throw in the fact that Damsgaard can easily slot in as an attacking midfielder, he can also be seen as an alternative for Dele Alli, who had a season to forget in 2020/21.

To that end, Tottenham have launched an offer that is in the upward of the €20 million mark, as per the report. However, that is unlikely to be accepted by Sampdoria, who are looking for a fee of €40 million, although a bid of €30 million could be a good starting point, the report adds.

It now remains to be seen if Tottenham return with an improved offer for the versatile Damsgaard or decide to pursue alternative targets in their bid to strengthen the attacking unit ahead of the new season.

Damsgaad is a great age for the player he is and would be great for spurs. However I think no champions league football and a ghost of an owner and a very difficult to deal with chairman, will put him off.Liverpool will get him, while Mr Levy dithers over the price.
