Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights firmly on 26-year-old German midfielder Leon Goretzka over a move this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Real Madrid have been forced into the transfer market for a midfield reinforcement before the summer transfer window slams shut. To that end, 26-year-old Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka has emerged as a priority target for the Spanish giants.

Leon Goretzka joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2018 after running down his contract with Schalke. The move to the Allianz Arena has worked wonders for the German midfielder, who has become a regular for club and country, especially in the past year or so.

To date, the 26-year-old has featured 112 times for Bayern Munich, directly contributing towards 52 goals (25 goals and 27 assists), with his stock constantly rising following a memorable 2020/21 campaign. However, Goretzka’s future with the Bundesliga heavyweights is under a shroud of uncertainty, which has seemingly alerted a number of clubs including Real Madrid.

The interest from Real Madrid was already understandable due to the fact that Luka Modric is inching closer to his final days as a senior footballer with every passing month. And the midfield situation has become even more concerning for Real Madrid owing to the injury that Toni Kroos has sustained.

It is this aforementioned injury that has forced Real Madrid into the transfer market for a central midfielder, with Goretzka being a viable target. However, the 26-year-old is not the only midfielder that Los Blancos are pursuing.

The report adds that Manuel Locatelli has also emerged as a serious target for the Merengues, who have also identified Eduardo Camavinga and Nicolo Barella as potential alternatives. However, it is Goretzka who is being viewed as a priority, with Carlo Ancelotti keen on reuniting with him at Real Madrid.

What now remains to be seen is if Real Madrid make their move for Goretzka this summer, with the German midfielder likely to be available at a cut-price fee if he does not commit his future to Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions are surely in a precarious situation over his future.
