Tottenham have reportedly set their sights on Mexican international defender Jorge Sanchez but face competition from Premier League rivals Everton.

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton could be set to battle it out for the signing of Mexican defender Jorge Sanchez from Club America in the ongoing transfer window.

Sanchez came through the ranks at Mexican outfit Santos Laguna before making the switch to Club America in 2018. Since then, the right-back has become a mainstay for his side, racking up 112 appearances in which he has two goals and six assists. A 15-time capped international for Mexico, the defender is currently representing El Tri at the Tokyo Olympics and has impressed quite a bit.

That has been enough to put Sanchez on the radars of Premier League clubs Tottenham and Everton this summer. Tottenham are undergoing a major revamp in defence under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo with the centre-back department set to be bolstered with the imminent arrival of Cristian Romero, while a move for Conor Coady is also being mooted.

At the same time, there could be changes in the right-back slot as well. Serge Aurier is in the final year of his contract and has already claimed that he wants a move away. Meanwhile, Matt Doherty had a difficult debut season at Tottenham and even though he is now reunited with former mentor Nuno Espirito Santo, there have been speculations that he, too, could be cut from the squad.

And, considering Japhet Tanganga’s injury problems, at least one new right-back would be a necessary addition for the Lilywhites. Takehiro Tomiyasu is being linked heavily but he could also be an option for a centre-back berth given his versatile nature. And, this is where someone like Sanchez could enter the fray for the north London giants.

Tottenham, though, will have to battle with Everton for the signing of the Club America defender. The Toffees are also in the market for a new right-back as Seamus Coleman is not getting any younger and struggled with fitness issues in the last season. Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey were used as makeshift right-backs last season but neither are naturals in the position.

Thus, the signing of a right-back becomes of paramount importance for new boss Rafa Benitez. To that end, the Merseysiders had been heavily linked with PSV Eindhoven captain Denzel Dumfries. But that trail has gone cold of late, which would explain their interest in securing the services of Jorge Sanchez.

The 23-year-old is contracted with Club America till the summer of 2025. And after his exploits at the Olympics, the Mexican outfit would likely demand a sizeable transfer fee for their star man. So, it will be interesting to see if either Tottenham or Everton decide to formalise their interest in Sanchez or look at other options.
